Muslims complain about Jesus joke

WASHINGTON, Oct. 29 /PRNewswire-USNewswire/ — A prominent national Muslim civil rights and advocacy organization today called on HBO to apologize for an episode of “Curb Your Enthusiasm” in which the main character splattered urine on a painting of Jesus.

In a letter to HBO Chairman and CEO Bill Nelson, Nihad Awad, national executive director of the Washington-based Council on American-Islamic Relations (CAIR) wrote:

“It is beyond tasteless to insult the religious sensibilities of billions of people in America and around the world with such a cheap and vulgar publicity stunt. Jesus, peace be upon him, is loved and revered by both Christians and Muslims. Muslims view him as one of God’s greatest messengers to mankind.

“The Quran, Islam’s revealed text, states: ‘Behold! The angels said: “O Mary! God gives you glad tidings of a Word from Him. His name will be Jesus Christ, the son of Mary, held in honor in this world and the Hereafter and in (the company of) those nearest to God.” (The Holy Quran, 3:45)

I guess we should get back to mocking Mohammed then 😛

Update: Muslims needn’t have bothered, the outrage from the Christian community outdoes CAIR’s mild press release on the issue.

Deal Hudson, author and publisher of, said he doesn’t find any humor in the episode.

I find it humourous that there’s a website called ‘’ that doesn’t just feature penetration shots of altar boys.

“I don’t think it’s funny,” Hudson told “Why is it that people are allowed to publicly show that level of disrespect for Christian symbols? If the same thing was done to a symbol of any other religions — Jewish or Muslim — there’d be a huge outcry. It’s simply not a level playing field.”

Actually I don’t recall ‘InsideCatholic’ (am I even allowed to say that?? Is that a dirty word/admission of criminal guilt?) showing any outrage whatsoever when the Pope said Islam had contributed absolutely nothing whatsoever to society. Sounds like the Pope was spitting on a pretty big Islamic religious symbol right about then.

Bill Donohue, president of the Catholic League, also criticized the episode, saying [Larry] David should “quit while he’s ahead,” and that the show is proof that the comedian’s best years are behind him.

For evidence of how great Bill Donohue’s comedic genius is (well I, for one, thought it was pretty funny how that fat Catholic guy overreacted to a mild joke that was itself about Catholics overreacting to ‘miracles’) compare the above quote to Larry David most recent quip:

“When [Larry] David and Jerry Seinfeld (playing himself) are asked if they ever experienced a miracle, David answers, ‘every erection is a miracle,’-

I know who I’d rather be stuck in an elevator with…Game. Set. Match. Curb Your Enthusiasm here I come!

  1. hey? If ever there was a site name that could be dedicated purely to unconsensual infant sex (read: Altar boy training), it would be that one. Either that, or a site dedicated to the Nazi Youth. I wonder if Benny has ever thought of trying to push it in that direction? An homage to his early years, perhaps?

Needless to say, it is amusing how they’re up in arms regarding the Christian defilement by a random comedian…but when their own leader/head of church/king ding-a-ling publicly denounces another religion, it’s all gravy. You go boys!!!

    1. Yeah I wonder how they came up with the name, did they just look at the internet search history of the average priest or something?

Catholics playing victim even though they have real power to decide election outcomes (at least in the States). Well, like you alluded to, I don’t remember a storm of protest hailing from Catholic bishops when Benedict said Islam had contributed nothing to the world, or when Holocaust-denying peeps were re-communicated to the Church. And this most recent mockery is nowhere near the level on the offend-o-meter as the Danish cartoon depicting Mohammed wearing a suicide bomber vest yet, from memory, Donoghue et al were all for freedom of speech in that instance…why not now??
